How are the streams counted?

They are Spotify's own play counts for each song, as Wikipedia's list of Spotify streaming records reported them. Spotify counts a stream when a song plays for 30 seconds or more. The race reads one version of the list a month; between readings the bars move at an even pace, so the in-between values are estimates; the monthly figures are exact.

Why does the race start in 2016?

That is when Wikipedia's list first kept a table of the most-streamed songs. Each month's version of that table is a dated reading of every song's total, so the race can show how the order changed. Before Oct 2016 there is no table to read.

Where do the figures come from?

From 122 versions of Wikipedia's list of Spotify streaming records, read one a month, each linked to its exact revision. Wikipedia's editors read the figures from Spotify. A song's total only grows, so a figure that would make it go down (a typo in that version) isn't used.

How often is this page updated?

Updates are manual for now. The list was last read on Nov 6, 2026.

How this is built

Every monthly figure traces back to a dated Wikipedia revision. Values between monthly readings are evened out, so they're estimates.

Sources

The table of most-streamed songs in Wikipedia's list of Spotify streaming records, read as it stood on the first of each month since Oct 2016 (122 versions), and again on . Its editors read each song's count from Spotify.

What counts

All-time Spotify streams per song, as the list reported them. A song races once it has made the list's top 15. Each version is dated by its own "as of" note. Totals only grow, so a figure that breaks a song's longest never-falling run (a typo in that version) isn't used. Colors show when each song came out.

How the race moves

Between monthly readings the bars move at an even pace, so those values are estimates. A song released while the race runs starts from zero on its release day. Songs that later dropped out of the top 100 hold their last listed total.
